Pakistan
was supposed to be a modern and progressive state responsive to
the imperatives of consistant change. It was to promote economic
development and social welfare. It was to be built on the basis
of the Holy, Quran, Sunnah and the guide lines given by the Father
of the Nation, Mohammad Ali Jinnah. It was to enforce principles
of UNITY, FAITH and DISCIPLINE and translate the very ideological
raison d etre of Pakistan into concrete material reality. But it
has failed to create an egalitrian state. The 2% wealthy, rich,
filthy rich, influential and corrupt in power and authority have
exploited, suppressed and subjugated the ninety eight percent of
the masses.
Economic mismanagement and exploitation, rampant corruption and
tax evasion have bankrupted the state. Outstanding debts threaten
the future of coming generations. Pakistan is at the mercy of international
donors and lenders and is vulnerable to their dictation and blackmail
on issues vital to Pakistan's survival. There is unemployment with
an ever-increasing number of people falling into absolute poverty
and destitution. The country is riven with ethnic divisions, sectarian
strife and violence. People are victims of abuse of authority by
the ruling elite and excesses, yearning for liberation. The people
are cynical about politics and distrustful of political promises
because they know that Pakistan politics is not working and that
their politicians have betrayed them.
Today
every citizen is in a state of despondency and uncertainity, There
is no confidence in the institutions, if they exist at all, because
most of them have been destroyed over a period of time through attrition.
An average individual, because of existing economical, social and
apolitical environment, has become disinterested in the well being
of the country and is unconcerned to constructive participation
in national affairs.
Creation of Pakistan as a welfare state has remained a mirage.
The deprived massive majority, both civil and military, have become
more impoverished through lack of attention. It is victim of political
melee and violence in ethnic and and sectarian furore.
It is time to acknowledge the enemy from with in overselves which
must be dealt with as resolutely as the enemy from without. It is
the Quiad-e-Azam's vision of Pakistan to which we must be faithful,
no matter how distasteful that vision may be to the obscurantist
forces pervading our polity. Personal belief systems not withstanding,
the democratic leadership of the country must follow the path charted
by Mr. Jinnah because that was the foundation of the country. Leadership
of Pakistan must steer the state and the nation according to the
principles on which it was founded.
We believe in Pakistan. It is blessed with gererous human and natural
resources. It has the potential to provide for its people a fulfilling
life of sufficiency free from poverty and want. Pakistanis are a
great people. Pakistan can and must be better - better schools,
better hospitals, better ways of tackling crime and building a modern
Islamic welfare state. We must move towards national reconciliation,
institutional reforms, economic break through social land cultural
flowering and equal opportunities in the economic, social, cultural
and political rights to all concerned irrespect of gender, caste
and creed. Every body should have the right to go about his or her
life free from the threat of intimidation.
